Het vissersdorp Tanji is een van de hoogtepunten van The Gambia en word regelmatig bezocht tijdens diverse excursies.

Iedere dag, aan het einde van de middag,  komen op het strand van Tanji ontelbaar veel prachtig beschilderde vissersboten aan met hun catch of the day. Honderden vrouwen en kinderen staan hun mannen en vaders op te wachten met grote emmers en kruiwagens om de vangst schoon te maken, te drogen, te roken en in te vriezen. Loop een stukje over het strand om de visserboten te zien en bezoek daarna vooral de rokerij. De stank is enorm en het is schrijnend om te zien onder welke omstandigheden de mensen, waaronder ook kinderen, hun werk moeten uitvoeren. Een bezoek aan Tanji maakt hoe dan ook indruk dus je zal het zeker niet snel vergeten!

Tip: Tanji is gunstig gelegen ten opzichte van Paradise Beach, dus het is de moeite om deze twee plekken te combineren. Blijf tot een uur of drie op het strand zodat je op het ‘hoogtepunt’ (aan het einde van de middag) in Tanji bent om alle bedrijvigheid te zien.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

The fishing village of Tanji is one of the highlights of The Gambia and is regularly visited during various excursions. Every day, at the end of the afternoon, countless beautifully painted fishing boats arrive at Tanji beach with their catch of the day. Hundreds of women and children wait for their husbands and fathers with large buckets and wheelbarrows to clean, dry, smoke and freeze the catch. Walk a bit on the beach to see the fishing boats and then visit the smokehouse. The stench is enormous and it is distressing to see the conditions under which people, including children, have to carry out their work. A visit to Tanji makes an impression regardless, so you certainly won’t forget it soon! Tip: Tanji is convenient to Paradise Beach, so it’s worth combining the two spots. Stay on the beach until about three o’clock so that you are at the ‘highlight’ (at the end of the afternoon) in Tanji to see all the activity.

El pueblo pesquero de Tanji es uno de los puntos más destacados de Gambia y se visita con regularidad durante diversas excursiones. Todos los días, al final de la tarde, innumerables barcos pesqueros bellamente pintados llegan a la playa de Tanji con su pesca del día. Cientos de mujeres y niños esperan a sus maridos y padres con grandes cubos y carretillas para limpiar, secar, ahumar y congelar la pesca. Pasee un poco por la playa para ver los barcos pesqueros y luego visite el ahumadero. El hedor es enorme y es angustioso ver las condiciones en las que las personas, incluidos los niños, tienen que realizar su trabajo. Una visita a Tanji deja una impresión, ¡así que seguro que no la olvidará pronto! Consejo: Tanji está cerca de Paradise Beach, por lo que vale la pena combinar los dos lugares.
